Studying Biomedical Science involves certain expectations. If you possess the following background knowledge, character traits and interests, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy and succeed in your studies.

  • Which character traits should I have?

You like to work independently and are conscientious and self-disciplined? Then you already have important character traits for this program and your future career path.

In order to create working hypothesis and solve problems you should be curious and imaginative.

As laboratory experiments may not yield immediate results and progress can sometimes be slow, having perseverance and the ability to cope with frustration is beneficial.

The ability to work in a team is important when working in a laboratory as seminars and meetings have to be coordinated and the usage of equipment has to be arranged. The mutual support from colleagues regarding problem solving will be important for the future.

  • What are the language requirements?

International applicants are required to provide proof of German language proficiency at DSH-II level or an equivalent, as the teaching language is German.

Strong English skills will be beneficial, as the majority of scientific literature is published in English. In most research laboratories, you will be part of an international team, where English is commonly used as the working language. From the fourth semester onward, selected courses, including their final exams, will be taught in English.

  • What background knowledge is necessary?

Even though the admission is based on academic performance (GPA) scientific background knowledge is beneficial for a successful study. Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics will be helpful to keep up with the lectures in the first semester.

A basic understanding of technology will make it easier for you to work with complex equipment throughout this research-oriented degree program

  • Are my interest compatible with this program?

This program has its focus on the biology of humans, so you should habe a basic understanding of the human body functions and their malfunctions as well as interest in clinical research.

As your primary workplace during the later stages of your studies will be the research laboratory, you should have enthusiasm and interest in hands-on practical work.

  • What kind of challenges can I expect?

A significant challenge of this program are the first three semesters as they are very work intensive and theoretical.

The program changes a lot from the fourth semester on. The students now independently decide on their focus and elect courses according to their interests. From this point on the practical work in a laboratory makes up a huge part of the study.

When conducting scientific research regarding diseases the use of animal models often is inevitable. This fact should be on the students mind when electing their courses and the research group for their bachelor thesis. If you have questions regarding that topic, please contact the departmental student adviser

The Philipps-University Marburg offers an Online-Self-Assessment (OSA) (only available in German) for the Biomedical Science Bachelor. This test can help you with your decision. Our OSA are designed for specific programs and you go through different tasks and questions. In the end you receive an individual feedback on how well the programme fits you.

Feel free to contact our departmental student adviser for personal advice.
