Im Rahmen der digitalen Vortragsreihe "Marburg Celtic Seminar: History of Celtic Studies" findet am 27. Juni um 18 Uhr der Vortrag von Prof. Nelly Blanchard (Université de Bretagne Occidentale) statt.

Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué (1815-1895): what was his role in the history of Breton and Celtic studies?

Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué (1815-1895), better known nowadays  for his literary work “Barzaz Breiz” than for his more scholarly studies, contributed greatly to the birth of Celtic studies in Brittany. He believed that the study of folk songs, like that of other manuscript sources, made it possible to trace the history of Brittany. Indeed he was the first to draw attention to Breton literature and to distinguishit from French literature. He was also interested in the literature of other Celtic-speaking countries, particularly Wales. He built up an extensive scholarly network and the success of “Barzaz Breiz” was Europe-wide. He thus established himself as a scholar of renown and, despite strong criticism regarding him and his work, he influenced several generations of authors and scholars, particularly those who obtained academic posts in Celtic studies by the end of the 19th century.
