Im Rahmen der digitalen Vortragsreihe "Bonn+Marburg Celtic Seminar" findet am 24. April um 18 Uhr der Vortrag von Elen Ifan (Cardiff University) statt.

From Language Rule to Requiem: Music and Translation in the National Eisteddfod

This paper will present the Welsh National Eisteddfod as an important translation agent in the Welsh performance culture. The 'Welsh only' rule was introduced to the Eisteddfod in 1950, which required all pieces performed on stage and in competitions to be in the Welsh language. This paper will consider the ways in which the National Eisteddfod has contribured to or influenced the creation of song-translations and other music-linked texts. Many translated texts still circulating in the Welsh performance culture are a direct result of the requirements of the 'Welsh only' rule. This paper will provide an overview of some of these texts translated for competition and concert performance, as well as some texts that stem from the literature competitions during the second half of the twentieth century up to the present day. It will be shown how the National Eisteddfod has played, and continues to play, a significant role as a translation agent within the network of the Welsh performance culture.

Die Vorträge finden digital immer um 18 Uhr s.t. statt.
