Unpublished Boğazköy-Fragments: Edition and Research
To date, the number of the Hittite tablets from Boğazköy has reached 30,000, most of which have been published in hand-drawn copies. Despite the continuous and rapid publication process for both of the edition series Keilschrifttexte aus Boghazköi and Keilschrifturkunden aus Boghazköi there are still unpublished fragments from Boğazköy. Bearing the siglum “Bo”, they originated in the early Ottoman-German excavations between 1906-1912 and were sent to the Staatliches Museum in Berlin for cleaning and conservation purposes as part of a tablet collection. The final part of these tablets were returned to Turkey in 1987. Based on the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Turkey in 2010, a team of Turkish Hittitologists was formed to conduct studies on these unpublished Bo-fragments. Since 2010 the author, a former member of the Oriental Institute and now of the University of Marburg, has been carrying on scholarly activities in the frame of his project Unpublished Boğazköy-Fragments: Edition and Research. Between 2010 and 2019, in cooperation with the members of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara two monographs are published with the title Unpublished Bo-Fragments in Transliteration I and II (= Chicago Hittite Dictionary Supplements 2 and 3) in which 362 Bo-fragments have been treated. The long-term aim of the project is to utilize further epigraphic material (ca. 900 Bo-fragments) and to make the results regarding the Hittite language, history, and culture accessible to the community of scholars in the humanities through the coming two new volumes of the series Chicago Hittite Dictionary Supplements. The edition of the unpublished Bo-fragments has become an essential element in the history of Hittitology in last thirty years and has been awaited for a long time by Hittitologists. In this sense, the edition and publication of the epigraphic material in both transliteration and digitally generated pictures (photographs and 3D-scans) would be a welcome result of this scholarly effort.
