Die Arbeitsgruppe "KI – Multimodale Modellierung & Maschinelles Lernen" (Prof. Ewerth) entwickelt in einem drei Jahre geförderten DFG-Projekt (2024-2027), das gemeinsam mit der Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian von Senckenberg in Frankfurt durchgeführt wird, Methoden zur automatischen Erschließung von historischen Fotos. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Bildbestand von 55.0000 Aufnahmen der ehemaligen Deutschen Kolonialgesellschaft, der an der Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt archiviert wird. Das mehrsprachige Portal an der Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt soll durch die KI-basierte Bildanalyse und angereicherte Metadaten um eine hochwertige semantische Suche erweitert werden. Zudem werden interaktive Visualisierungen zur Exploration des Bildbestands bereitgestellt. Das Projekt verbessert damit nachhaltig die Auffindbarkeit der historischen Fotografien und klärt zugleich ethische Fragen bei der Nutzung des kolonialen Bildmaterials.

The research group "AI – Multimodal Modeling & Machine Learning" (Prof. Ewerth) is developing methods for the automatic indexing of historical photographs in a three-year funded DFG project (2024-2027), which is being conducted jointly with the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library in Frankfurt. This involves a collection of images comprising 55,000 photos of the former German Colonial Society, which is archived at the Frankfurt University Library. The multilingual portal at the Frankfurt University Library is to be expanded with a high-quality semantic search through AI-based image analysis and enriched metadata. In addition, interactive visualizations for exploring the image collection will be provided. The project thus sustainably improves the discoverability of the historical photographs and simultaneously addresses ethical questions regarding the use of the colonial image material.
