On behalf of the Economics of the Middle East Research Group of Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS) & the Natural Disaster Management (NaDiMa) academic exchange project, we cordially invite you to our ninth online NaDiMa Dialogue on

The Economics of Natural Disasters

The workshop introduces to social science research on the effects of natural disasters. Participants will be familiarized with basic questions of theory, measurement, and causal identification needed to carry out social science research on the effects of disasters.

Day 1 (May 24): Theory and measurement
• Introduction to behavioral changes predicted by (economic) theory
• Discussion of how disasters can be measured

Day 2 (May 26): Student presentations and empirical studies
• Students present their empirical results in groups
• Overview of the literature on the effects of disasters
• Discussion of selected empirical studies with a focus on causal identification

The workshop is aimed at Master & PhD students from the fields of Economics, Disaster Management, Human Geography and similar fields. Practical knowledge of data analysis and econometrics is required.

Workshop Instructor: 

Prof. Dr. Jerg Gutmann, Assistant Professor, Universität Hamburg
Prof. Dr. Jerg Gutmann is Assistant Professor for Behavioral Law & Economics at the University of Hamburg. He works at the intersection between economics, law, and political science. His research and teaching interests include the heterogeneous impacts of natural disasters on human rights and the economy.
