Turkey Studies

Students enrolled in the BA Near and Middle Eastern Studies and the BA Near and Middle Eastern Studies International may choose to focus on Contemporary Turkey Studies as part of their degree program. This focus enables students to acquire comprehensive knowledge of contemporary Turkey. In addition, through language training, students gain in-depth understanding of the history, politics, society, and media of modern Turkey.

The course program integrates interdisciplinary approaches from disciplines including Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, Islamic Studies, Anthropology, and Cultural Studies. Topics such as democratization and authoritarianism are adressed alongside current questions of religiosity and popular culture.

The BA near and Middle Eastern Studies International allows for a one-year stay at one of our partner universities in Turkey. The program is further enriched by guest lectures from colleagues based in Turkey and by the opportunity for active participation in our Turkey Studies working group
