Spectroscopic detection of microplastics

Microplastic in the environment is a global problem, which received growing attention in recent years and which will become a more important issue within the next decades. Microplastic is plastic particles of the size below 5 mm. They are brought into the environment through consumer products and are created in all sorts of waters worldwide. They can be found in marine animals and thus enter the food chain.

The research group of Prof. Koch wants to develop procedures to quantify microplastic concentration in environmental probes. We don't want to give away our strategy at this point, but our first results are promising.

If you want to work in this research field we have interesting topics for bachelor- and master-theses.
