The focus of our work is dealing with the regulation of viral RNA synthesis of highly pathogenic viruses e.g. filoviruses such as Ebola virus or Marburg virus or coronaviruses (such as MERS coronavirus or SARS coronavirus).

Of greatest interest is how the polymerase complex gets enganged on the viral genome in order to initiate transcription of viral mRNAs (viral transcription) or synthesis of new full-length viral genomes (viral replication).
The interplay between cis-acting elements on the RNA genome, the viral polymerase complex, and the interaction with cellular proteins plays a major role in regulating viral transcription and replication.
The main focus of our work is how viral protein phosphorylation by cellular kinases and phosphatases.contributes to the regulation of viral RNA synthesis.
