Welcome to the work area for Adult Education/Extracurricular Youth Education

On these pages, you will found out more about the work area for Adult Education/Extracurricular Youth Education. Adult education/extracurricular youth education is a topic that historically goes back to the academic study of educational institutions outside of schools, which has broadly differentiated over time into independent subdisciplines.

The commonality is a view toward educational and learning processes at the various age bands over a lifetime, as well as their organization and institutional framing. As a part of this, today there is also a focus on self-organized and unplanned learning and educational processes in addition to organized educational offerings.

Philipps University Marburg is one of the few universities in Germany where both areas of the study and research emphasis are each represented equally by an professorial chair. Wolfgang Seitter holds the chair for Adult Education/Continuing Education, and Ivo Züchner holds the chair for Extracurricular Youth Education. This means for study and research that enough space has been allocated — in addition to the focus on multiple topics in adult education and extracurricular youth education — for mutual reference by both areas in line with lifelong learning.

The close cooperation with instructors and institutions in the field, in particular cooperation with the German Institute for Adult Education (Bonn), supplements the course offerings of the department thanks to proven practitioners and offers the option for institutional investigations, (research) internships, research, work contracts, as well as graduation and qualification theses.
