Welcome to the work area for Social and Rehabilitation Pedagogy

Social and rehabilitation work intends to stand by people in various life circumstances and support them in overcoming even difficult situations.

The central element is acknowledging the person and groups being addressed in each case in their dignity and inner selves and in doing so to support them in their rights to self-determination and social participation, with the goal of a comprehensive realization of human rights for all people.

The spectrum of activity in social and rehabilitation pedagogy work is diverse. It comprises concrete and everyday support of the people being addressed in the form of assistance, advising, accompaniment, etc., including as well the design, planning, and organization of services and offerings as well as public outreach and research in the area of social and rehabilitation work.

The disciplines in social and rehabilitation pedagogy have each developed their own traditions and different specialized perspectives and methods.

Rehabilitation pedagogy thus focuses on an individual-centered, clinical perspective whereas social pedagogy orients its view toward the interface of subject and social group and living environment/society. The study of social and rehabilitation pedagogy is thus about perceiving these theoretical traditions in their distinctness and at the same time identifying the connection among them.

The instructional offerings in social and rehabilitation pedagogy is situated at the interface of theory, empiricism, and action and contains historical and future-oriented perspectives.

This is based on the knowledge that theory formation in social and rehabilitation pedagogy can proceed only in the context and analysis of practice – practice that changes permanently based on the respective historical and current political frameworks.
