The Potency of Mapuche Indigenous Bibles and Biographies

The Bible, a non-Mapuche textual object has come to play a central role in the constitution of indigenous Mapuche shamanic identity and power in southern Chile. I analyze why Francisca Kolipi, a nonliterate Catholic Mapuche shaman, charged me to write about her life and practice in the form of a bible—the physical manifestation of her power—within a larger set of engagements that center on agency, literacy, and temporality. I argue that Mapuche oral shamanic biographies and performances—some of which take the form of “bibles” and involve shamanic literacies—play a central role in the production of indigenous history in southern Chile.
