Research interests

My research focuses in the broad sense on the factors that limit species distribution and on the causes and consequences of biological diversity. In particular I aim to understand how habitat characteristics, functional constrains and phylogeny affect (i) the assembly of communities, (ii) the dispersion of species traits and (iii) the geographic variation of species diversity. My research is based on a combination of macroecological, ecological, evolutionary and comparative approaches.

Most of my work concentrates on Europe because a huge body of information on species biology, ecology, historical and current distribution is already available. My preferred model organisms are invertebrates, in particular insects.

Key words of current research:

aquatic species; beta-diversity; biogeography; dispersal; distribution; dragonflies; Europe; freshwater animals; freshwater habitats; Gastropoda; glaciations; grasslands; history; latitude; macroecology; northern refugia; Plathelminthes; phylogeography; phytophagous insects; range size; species richness; trees

Central current research questions

I.   How does the habitat-template affect evolution and dispersal ability of freshwater invertebrates?

II.  How does land use intensification affect the phylogenetic and functional composition of plant and insect communities?

III. What are the main host plant characteristics related to species richness, community structure and diet specialisation of phytophagous insects on trees?
