Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the production and dissemination of knowledge – and raising new questions about higher education.

Theme of the lecture series for the 2026 summer semester: "University Education in Times of Upheaval: How AI Is Changing the Way We Think"

In the summer semester of 2026, the Studium Generale at Marburg University will explore the question: What role does university education play in a world where machines are increasingly capturing, analyzing, and interpreting knowledge – and may even surpass human thinking?

The lecture series titled “University Education in Times of Upheaval: How AI Is Changing the Way We Think” begins with an examination of the concept of education across different social structures and eras, and then turns to the question of what kinds of skills are necessary to shape the world of tomorrow in a positive way. In a second thematic block, the phenomenon of artificial intelligence will be examined from various disciplinary perspectives: How should education address these new technological possibilities? What impact do they have on our view of humanity? What ethical questions are relevant in medical applications? What makes us human? What political and social changes can we expect?

The Studium Generale begins on April 29, 2026 and takes place every Wednesday at 6:15pm at the lecture hall of the Marburg University Library, Deutschhausstraße 9. The event is open to both members of the university and the general public.

Participation is possible in a flexible hybrid format. The livestream is available on the university’s YouTube channel.
