Palliative Deep Brain Stimulation: A Qualitative Study with People with Parkinson’s Disease and Their Caregivers
Description
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapeutic option for managing motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet access remains limited due to strict eligibility criteria. Patients with advanced disease and reduced life expectancy are typically excluded, although a palliative approach to DBS could potentially alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. The aim of this project is to explore DBS as a possible palliative treatment option and to understand the perspectives of people with PD and their caregivers regarding its perceived benefits, risks, and ethical implications. To achieve this, qualitative semi-structured interviews will be conducted with patients and their significant others to gain deeper insights into the perception and acceptance of palliative DBS in the context of advanced PD.
