From the second half of the eleventh century, the political communities of the western Mediterranean began to change shapes dramatically as cities and lands that had been ruled by Muslim rulers fell to Christian ones. This talk addresses the legal questions and social responses elicited by the social and demographic transformation of the Peninsula and the Maghrib as a result of these military and political changes.
