Biocultural Community Protocols (BCPs) are mechanisms for environmental governance of biodiversity that aim to establish locally, at the community level, a regulatory framework for the central issues addressed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (conservation of biodiversity and traditional knowledge, prior and informed access, benefit sharing). In this talk, I will present the first results of a research carried out with Jean Foyer (CNRS) and Geoffroy Filoche (CNRS), in the framework of the Bioculturalis project (Université de Grenoble), based on three Panamanian examples (the Guna comarca, the El Piro community of the Ngobe comaca and the Embera Ipeti community). These three indigenous experiences not only illustrate the different relationships that these peoples maintain with governmental norms and institutions, but also allow us to understand the scope of the BCPs.
