How sustainable are the companies according to the EU taxonomy?

In a recent research project, Prof. Dr. Marc Steffen Rapp and Melina Roser study the conformity of large European listed firms -- specifically, the industrial and service companies listed in the EURO STOXX 50 -- with the EU Taxonomy. The sample firms generated a total turnover of 2,443 billion euros during the reporting period 2022, which corresponds to around 63% of Germany's economic output (measured on the basis of gross domestic product). The research documents that only 6% of this turnover and less than 25% of the investments made by the firms classify as sustainable in the sense of the EU taxonomy. Thus, the researchers conclude that there is still a long way to go to achieve a sustainable economy in the sense of the EU taxonomy.

The research, published in the MACIE EU Taxonomy Report 2023, has been presented in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper on 17 May 2023. The FAZ report of 17 May 2023 (114/2023) can be found on page 27 or online here.
