History of Religion is dedicated to the plurality of religions and religious currents with their diverse culture- and society-specific histories — one focus among others is on Islam.

Focuses:

  • The aesthetics of religion, i.e., the study of sensory perception and its coding interacting with religious practice and experience, e.g., visual cultures in Islam (Beinhauer-Köhler)
  • Material culture and space with mosques and multireligious spaces (Beinhauer-Köhler), home shrines (Mirko Roth), and museum arrangements (Liefert, Tavangar).
  • Religious communication and media (Roth, Beinhauer-Köhler)
  • Religious plurality in history and the present (Merten, Beinhauer-Köhler)
