Alderik H. Blom studied Celtic Studies, Medieval Studies and Cultural History at the University of Utrecht (UU) and Germanic Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam (UVA) from 1995 to 2002. During his studies he obtained the Diploma of Celtic Studies (Dioplóma sa Léann Ceilteach) at the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2001.
From 2002 to 2007 he was employed at the University of Cambridge. After obtaining a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) there in 2003, he was awarded a PhD by the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic Studies at the University of Cambridge in 2007. His dissertation focused on the decline of the Gallic language in Late Antiquity. During his PhD, he spent a year as Sir John Rhŷs Scholar at Jesus College, Oxford.
From 2007 to 2010 he was a Research Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge. In 2010, he earned a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, with a research project on glossography in the writing of vernacular languages in Western Europe from Late Antiquity to the High Middle Ages.
In 2013 he was appointed Associate Professor of Celtic at the University of Oxford and Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford.
In July 2016, he received and accepted an appointment at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. He was appointed University Professor with effect from 01 September 2017.
