Social Crises in the Past and Present: A Joint Project from Marburg and Würzburg

An Interdisciplinary Crisis Summit

  • Background

In spring 2020, the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) called on doctoral candidates and early postdocs from small disciplines to develop new communication and networking strategies. With the joint initiative “Small Subjects: Visibly Innovative!”, the HRK and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research are recognizing the so-called small subjects, which, with their diverse perspectives, make a decisive contribution to the richness of the German higher education landscape and to overcoming social challenges. 19 projects were given the opportunity to implement their ideas in the nationwide competition “Small Subjects: Visibly Innovative!”. One project was submitted by Theresa Roth (Marburg) and Kristina Becker (Würzburg). It deals with social crises in historical and current contexts and thus also refers to the coronavirus pandemic and the contribution that small disciplines can make to the discourse surrounding this topic.

  • Workshop

At our interdisciplinary workshop on January 29 and 30, 2021, we brought together researchers from large and small disciplines to discuss crises in the past, present and future. In this way, we wanted to link the specialist knowledge of small disciplines in the humanities with that of larger or current disciplines such as psychology or sociology in order to show that we can best tackle current and future issues together. In addition to the very different crises that are relevant in the various disciplines, it was also about sharing our different approaches, methods and objectives.
