Research and teaching are in the foreground of all department activities. While research takes place at the level of the working groups, responsible teaching is a joint task of all instructors in the department. The faculty currently offers three courses of study: the undergraduate Bachelor program in six semesters, the four-semester Master program, as well as the teacher training program at grammar schools. In order to avoid specialization of students at too early of a stage, and to ensure "polyvalence" of the graduates in the labor market and a wide-ranging education, the department continues to support the concept of a broad-based Bachelor's degree program. In this program, students learn the guiding principles of scientific thinking and working methods of all the chemical disciplines at an elementary level, before they move on to the research-oriented Master's degree program, wherein specialization is possible through several practical research projects. The traditionally technically oriented teacher training program has benefited from the resurgence of the subject in the didactic discourse.

Teaching and research rely on taxpayers' money to be used sparingly. The Department of Chemistry is therefore in a continuous planning process in order to optimally use human and material resources in the interests of research and teaching. One component of this effort to conserve resources is the centralization of the supply and disposal of chemicals and devices, which has been in practice for decades. The employees of the respective departments are "pros" at what they do and provide the working groups with everything they need for their research quickly and inexpensively. In addition, this centralized infrastructure is a great advantage for research projects, as students have quick access to all required materials, and can thus concentrate fully on their studies, free of logistical questions.

As with the supply of chemicals and equipment, technical services also have a central infrastructure. The precision engineering workshop, the information and technology department, and the glass workshop all provide services for research and teaching. They advise doctoral candidates and students on research problems and can construct novel research equipment to address these specific issues. It is important to mention that all workshops, as well as the central training laboratory for chemical laboratory technicians, are dedicated to apprentices receiving a first-class training in accordance with their important role in research and industry.

Last but not least, all practical courses in the department in the bachelor's, teacher's and master's programs, as well as the practical chemistry courses for students of medicine and biology, are organized by scientific staff. This ensures reliability and continuity regarding both instruction and occupational safety. All practical courses benefit from the centralized infrastructure in a similar manner to the working groups.

Scientists do not like beauracracy. However, competent administration is necessary in such a highly regulated environment. Personal, household, and university legal questions are handled by competent employees in the office of the dean, in the economic administration and in the examination office with dexterity and constructive interaction to support research and teaching. This requires constructive interaction with the central university administration.
