VPN-Access

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) enables members of Philipps-Universität to securely access resources and data of the university and some external providers via the Internet. Essentially, the VPN makes it possible to work without the need to be physically present within the university's IT infrastructure and without having to forego the advantages available to university members on the physical network.

Safety information

If you enter "VPN Uni Marburg" in search engines, for example, you may come across dubious fake VPNs. This is malware or fraudulent software that encrypts data on your computer or reads your passwords.
Therefore, please only ever download the VPN client via the links below!

  • Related services

Research in paid trade journals, databases and other offers is no longer carried out exclusively via VPN. For many offers, the modern registration service Shibboleth is used; this only requires a web browser. An overview of the access is available at the University Library.

  • Worth knowing

The VPN protocol used is DTLS. It was originally developed and standardized by the manufacturer Cisco. In addition to Cisco's own client Anyconnect, the free client openconnect was developed, which you can also use. Despite some technical similarities, DTLS is not compatible with OpenVPN. In the Windows version of openconnect, however, the TUN/TAP driver of OpenVPN is also used.

    - From 16th september 2022 to 5th june 2023, the VPN group unimr-vpn-students still allowed access to literature and publishing offers as well as the public offers of the Philipps University. This group was switched off completely on 5th june 2023; since then, two-factor authentication (e.g. "extended password" consisting of a password with a directly attached TAN) has been required for all VPN access (including with student accounts). The VPN group for this is called unimr-vpn-students-password+2FA. The EZproxy web service of the University Library has been available for access to fee-based publishing services since the beginning of 2023, see the overview of the University Library.
