The Marburg Trial-Monitoring Programme at the International Research and Documentation Centre for War Crimes Trials (ICWC) participated in the Annual Trial Monitoring Meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Skopje, Macedonia, from 24.04.17 to 26.04.17. Prof. Dr. Bock and Paco Pawolleck represented the project on site and gained versatile insights into the practice of monitoring in numerous states of the OSCE region. The meeting was organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE Mission to Skopje. A total of 29 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from the OSCE region and experts from seven OSCE missions participated.

The exchange of experiences, methods and challenges was the main focus of the meeting. Ms. Bock and Mr. Pawolleck were able to present the Marburg training concept and report on the practice of our systematic process monitoring. Intensive debates on monitoring principles as well as training sessions on central fair trial standards characterized the meeting. Promising contacts were made with representatives of some NGOs and the OSCE missions. For example, an event on the challenges of monitoring war crimes trials in Croatia is being planned at the Philipps University in Marburg.
