Semester Buddies

colourbox.de

Semester Buddies support international students throughout one semester and help them feel at home in their new environment. Unlike the orientation program buddies, this initiative is about long-term guidance and intercultural exchange during the whole semester.

What do semester buddies do?

  • Before arrival: Buddies connect with their students early, answer questions, and provide tips for getting ready for their time abroad.
  • Arrival & welcome: They meet their student on arrival, make sure they feel comfortable, and help them settle into their first days on campus.
  • Campus life: Buddies introduce newcomers to the university environment, show them around key spots, and share useful insights on student life.
  • Everyday life & social activities: They help international students get oriented in the city, explore together, and join social or cultural events to make new memories and friends.

Time commitment and agreements

The most critical time for support is during arrival and the first weeks before the semester starts with the intensity decreasing over time.

Each Buddy and their “newbie” can make their own agreements on how they want to structure the partnership – for example, how often to meet, how involved to be in daily life, or whether to join cultural events together. This flexibility ensures the experience works well for both sides.

Program structure & community

The Buddy System also provides a framework for all participants:

Kick-off Mixer: At the beginning of the semester, all Buddies and international students meet each other, making it easy to connect and start building friendships.
Midterm Meeting: A chance to check in, share experiences, and strengthen connections.
End-of-Term Meeting: A closing event to celebrate the semester, reflect on experiences, and say goodbye.
