In our mentoring and buddy programs, you can choose the level of engagement that best fits your needs. From structured mentoring relationships to lighter buddy formats, each option offers a different way of connecting, supporting, and learning from others.

As a MarMento Mentor,you take on a more advanced and committed role. After completing a comprehensive training course, within the framework of the MarSkills module MarMento: International Mentoring Skills, you are assigned to one or more international students and support them throughout the semester. You help them navigate university life, cultural differences, and everyday challenges. Your engagement is recognized with ECTS credits and offers you the chance to develop intercultural competence and valuable soft skills

As an e-MarMento Mentor, you complete an online training module on ILIAS to prepare for your role. The training allows you to dive deeper into the world of mentoring, learn a lot about intercultural communication, feedback and reflection techniques, which you can also apply in other contexts. Afterwards, you support incoming international students by being available to answer questions and offer guidance – whether online or in person. This role is ideal if you’re looking for a flexible way to engage interculturally and support new students settle in. It’s a great opportunity to build connections and gain mentoring experience at your own pace.

Semester Buddies support incoming international students throughout the semester. They help students settle in, navigate the campus, visit social events together and feel welcomed in their new environment. This type of engagement requires you to spend a little more time with your newbie than just for the orientation. Matches are welcome to participate in the cultural program together but it is not obligatory to complete an accompanying training module.

Orientation Buddies support incoming international students for about one week during the International Student Orientation. They help students take the first steps and complete the formalities, such as setting up student account, registration in town, getting health insurance, and more. If you don’t have a lot of time throughout the whole semester, this is an easy way to get involved. The orientation program only lasts one week, usually shortly before classes start.
