Studying in Times of Crisis

Political crises, violent unrest, or armed conflicts can arise suddenly or intensify rapidly. These crises often pose a threat to family members and friends in affected regions. People with ties to these countries may experience fear, worry, and emotional strain, and feel the impact on their lives at our university — on their studies, work, and stay in Germany.
Philipps-Universität Marburg expresses deep understanding for these situations.

On this page, you will find general guidance on study and examination regulations, as well as counseling services related to financing, mental health, and residence law, which can support students in times of crisis.
Specific information for current crisis regions is updated according to developments and placed at the top of relevant sections.

General information

  • Proof of financial means: Proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses is required for all residence permits. There are no exceptions to this legal requirement.
  • The requirements specified by the German Embassy when issuing the visa must be strictly adhered to. Again, there are no exceptions or deviations possible.

  • Extended exemption for residence permit extensions

The city parliament has extended an exemption regarding the amount of money that must be proven to cover living expenses until the end of 2027. To extend your residence permit for the purpose of studying, you currently only need to provide proof of €6,000 for a one-year extension or €12,000 for a two-year extension. Proof can be provided in the form of a normal bank statement; a blocked account is no longer mandatory for the extension. Part-time jobs or their relevant employment contracts can also be taken into account as proof of financial means.

  • Apply for renewal in good time

It is advisable to apply for renewal or issuance of your residence permits approximately 4 months before your current permit/visa expires and to book an appointment via the online booking portal at the same time. If, even with 4 months' notice, no appointment can be booked before the end of your current title/visa, the immigration office will usually automatically and unsolicitedly send a provisional certificate to your postal address in good time (please check your mailbox regularly!).

Our contact details can be found on our website under “Questions about residency law and statements from the Immigration Office”.
