Troubleshooting (Windows-specific)

 Problems Possible Causes and Solutions
Establishing the connection in Windows 8.1 fails with the message "Failed to initialize connection subsystem"
  • The problem is caused by a security update of Windows 8.1. By now, Microsoft released a fixed update. Please connect your computer to the Internet, choose Start → Control Panel → Windows Update and install all available updates. After a Windows restart your AnyConnect connection should work properly again. If you need support, please contact IT-Servicedesk of HRZ.
Establishing the connection fails with the message "The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot".

  • The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is enabled. In this case AnyConnect is on principal not trying to establish a connection.
Change the properties of the network connection that connects you to the internet and disable the ICS as following:
Choose Start → Control Panel → Network and Internet → Change adapter settings  → Right-click on the shared network connection and choose PropertiesSharing tab. Then deactivate the checkbox "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection". After that, confirm the dialog via OK.

AnyConnect fails with the message "AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try connection again".
  • If you are using the Kaspersky AV firewall you need to add AnyConnect as a firewall exception. It might be more useful to use the free anti-virus software provided by the HRZ.
  • You have encountered a software bug in AnyConnect. If you find a value like "@oem20.inf,%vpnva_Desc%;Cisco AnyConnect VPN Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64" for the registry key "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpnva\DispayName" in the Windows registry (regedit.exe), please delete all characters before the word "Cisco" in the value. After that, close the registry editor, start AnyConnect and try to connect again.
AnyConnect fails with the message "VPN Service not available. The VPN agent service is not responding. Please restart this application after a minute".
  • The AnyConnect VPN service does not start automatically. The error message "VPN Service not available. The VPN agent service is not responding. Please restart this application after a minute" means, that the Cisco AnyConnect VPN service currently is not running. This could be caused by a Windows boot accelerator software, that modifies the start order of the Windows services in a way, some services cannot be started anymore. In the past such problems were caused by e.g. Lenovo Rapid Boot (also: RapidBoot HDD Accelerator, RapidBoot Shield) and CCleaner. After uninstalling such softwares, the problem should be solved (Windows XP: Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs, Windows Vista/7/8: Control Panel → Programs and Features).

AnyConnect fails with the message "Connection attempt failed. Please try again".

  • In AnyConnect the wrong VPN-Gateway was specified. Please enter the VPN-gateway vpn.uni-marburg.de and try to connect again.
AnyConnect fails with the message "Could not connect to server. Please verify Internet connectivity and server address"
  • The computer's Internet connection does not work. Please make sure your computer has a working Internet connection and try to connect again.
Establishing the connection works, but secured content of UMRnet can not be accessed.
  • A firewall or internet security software from Comodo manages the connection and prevents Cisco AnyConnect from working properly. Choose Start → Control Panel → Network and Internet → Change adapter settings  → right-click on the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client and choose Properties. In the list of supported items of the connection deactivate the checkbox Comodo Internet Security Firewall Driver and confirm the dialog via OK.
The installation fails with the message: "Failed to install AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client with installer error: Incorrect function. A VPN connection cannot be established".
  • An additional firewall, anti-virus or internet security software prevents the installation of AnyConnect. Please temporarily deactivate this software and try the installation of AnyConnect again. If this also fails, please uninstall this software, restart your Windows computer and try the installation of AnyConnect again. If you uninstalled your anti-virus software, please install another anti-virus software, for example the free anti-virus-software for students and staff of university.
