Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is the intense connection of two academic disciplines that pride themselves on their strength in research. Mathematics has been taught in Marburg since 1527 and is thereby one of the most venerable fields of study at the Philipps-Universität. Computer science demonstrates an openness for that which is new. The department has a total of approximately 2,000 students.
The shared development of progressive curricula and intensive research in trendsetting areas of mathematics and computer science - accompanied by a strong sense of duty toward teaching - characterize the atmosphere at the faculty. On our web site you will find information on our four clearly structured degree programs from bachelor degrees to teacher training degrees, where the teaching quality benefits from periodical evaluations.
Close cooperation in research and teaching between the two fields of mathematics and computer science contributes significantly to the pleasant working climate at the faculty: Joint research projects, jointly supervised internships, and interdisciplinary graduation theses are common practice. Working groups within the two disciplines with diverse international contacts make for a stimulating academic life.
Interdisciplinary collaboration also extends beyond departmental borders. Collaboration with biologists, chemists, and physicists are just as much the norm as with scholars from the humanities and business / economy departments. These contribute to a comprehensive educational experience and help you get a head start on dealing with the requirements of various areas of application.
