Program: Business Mathematics
Degree: Master of Science (M.Sc.)
Program length: 2 years / 4 semesters (120 ECTS points)
Start: winter and summer semester

The objective of the Business Mathematics master's program is to enrich and to expand the specialized competencies acquired in the Business Mathematics bachelor's program. In addition to continuing courses in Mathematics, Business Mathematics and Computer Science, you are introduced to independent scientific work in the master's program. You will study current research literature and will process a problem from Business Mathematics in the master's thesis.

Major topics

Specializations are possible in the following fields, among others:

Applied Mathematics:

  • Numerics and Optimization
  • Stochastics and Statistics
  • Financial and Insurance Mathematics

Economic Sciences:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Innovation and Information
  • Market-Based Corporate Management
  • Political Economics

Objectives

The professional field for business mathematicians is broadly diversified and resembles that of economic scientists.

A successfully completed master's program enables you

  • to perform independent mathematical work in industry and business,
  • to manage projects which relate to the analysis, modeling and solving of scientific, economic or technical problems,
  • to perform design, development and research responsibilities in scientific and public institutions
  • to work as a scientific assistant or scientific employee at a university,
  • access to a doctorate.

The professional prospects for business mathematicians are generally very good! Successful graduates of the program can be found in the insurance and credit industry, corporate consulting, information technology or at universities and research institutions, among others.

  • Admission requirements

    Required university degree

We require proof of completion of a specific Bachelor's degree programme in "Business Mathematics" or a relevant Bachelor's degree programme in the field of "Mathematics" or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign university degree that qualifies students for a profession.

Students with a Bachelor's degree in "Business Mathematics" or "Mathematics" and a degree in "Mathematics" as a teaching profession at a secondary school (First State Examination or Master's degree) are eligible for admission. Students with a Bachelor's degree in another discipline are entitled to admission if they have completed at least 90 credit points (CP) in business mathematics modules as part of this or another degree programme.

At least 42 credits should be allocated to modules that correspond to the targets and requirements of the following modules: Fundamentals of Mathematics, Linear Algebra I, Linear Algebra II, Analysis I as well as Analysis II. Proficiency in stochastic, measurement and integration theory, optimisation and numerics should also have been acquired.

At least 18 credits in business administration and economics modules should also have been completed.

The Examination Committee may link admission to the condition that additional coursework and/or examinations totalling a maximum of 30 CP be completed. In such cases, the degree programme may be prolonged accordingly.

Course-specific knowledge and skills that must be proven

The degree programme's modules and courses are usually taught in English. A German-language course is also possible if requested by all the students in the module or course. The coursework and the examinations can be taken in either German or English, depending on the student's choice. Optional and mandatory courses may include modules imported from Bachelor's degree programmes or other subject areas in the German language, which means the choice may be restricted in some cases.

    Therefore, either

    • a) English proficiency of at least level C1* of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” or
    • b) English proficiency of at least level B1* of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" and German proficiency of at least level "DSH-2"*

    must be proven.

*The linked website provides further information on the evidence and certificates required to prove that the language level has been reached.

Admission ModeDirect admission is granted with complete fulfillment of the admission requirements.
