Eligibility assessment process - Peace and Conflict Studies (MA)

1. Documents to be submitted

The following documents and certifications are required for participation in the eligibility assessment process:

a) Application for admission (online application of the online application portal)

b) The first undergraduate university degree with final grade

c) The Transcript of Records for determining your previous course contents

d) Certification of skills in English at Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe

e) Tabular resume (DIN A4 page)

f) Approx. 3 DIN A4 page letter in which the applicant presents their personal discipline-related suitability in reference to the criteria below

g) Additional certifications of personal disciplinary suitability, which relate to the criteria below, as applicable.

2. Criteria for personal disciplinary suitability

Personal disciplinary suitability is evaluated based on the submitted documents, according to the following criteria. A total of up to 101 suitability points can be achieved.

1.1. Up to 51 suitability points are assigned for the final grade point average or, if the final grade point average should not be available, a submitted, calculated average grade on the basis of at least 70% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree, according to the following key:
Grade points 13.9 to 15.0 (= decimal grade 1.0 to 0.7) = 51 points
Grade points 12.7 to 13.8 (= decimal grade 1.4 to 1.1) = 46 points
Grade points 11.9 to 12.6 (= decimal grade 1.7 to 1.5) = 41 points
Grade points 10.9 to 11.8 (= decimal grade 2.0 to 1.8) = 36 points
Grade points 10.0 to 10.8 (= decimal grade 2.3 to 2.1) = 31 points
Grade points 8.9 to 9.9 (= decimal grade 2.7 to 2.4) = 26 points
Grade points 7.9 to 8.8 (= decimal grade 3.0 to 2.8) = 21 points
The specifications are based on the grade scale according to § 28 of the General Terms of the Philipps University Marburg.

1.2. Up to 15 suitability points are assigned for the letter of interest and the resume. In the letter of interest with accompanying resume, the applicant should present and substantiate their subject-based and personal suitability.

1.3. Up to 10 suitability points are assigned for certified, relevant foreign experience as part of a course of study, internship or professional work of at least four weeks each (two points per month).

1.4. Up to 5 suitability points are assigned for previous knowledge in the subject. This can be demonstrated by:

  • a relevant Bachelor thesis or
  • demonstrated relevant practical work of at least four weeks in governmental and civil society organizations in the field of conflict resolution, e.g. supporters of development collaboration, political foundations, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations (one point is assigned per activity) or
  • successful participation in qualification offerings such as summer schools or training in the field of conflict resolution and mediation (one point is assigned per participation).

1.5. Depending on language level and number of languages, up to 10 suitability points are assigned for additional foreign language skills, in addition to English, at Level B1 of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages of the Council of Europe.

1.6. An additional 10 suitability points are assigned, depending on scope, for knowledge of the methods of qualitative and/or quantitative social research.
An evaluation with a total of at least 75 suitability points is prerequisite for admission to the program.
