Video and Web Conferences

Members of Philipps-Universität Marburg can use the following systems for video and web conferences in teaching, research and administration.

All three systems meet the necessary requirements for data protection and IT security, but Zoom-X is only approved for teaching (courses with more than 300 participants).

The three services differ in terms of their possible functions: While BigBlueButton is suitable for all types of application scenarios and rooms can also be created directly in a course or in a group in the ILIAS learning platform, DFNconf is mainly recommended for meetings or working group sessions. Zoom-X can be used on request if there are special requirements due to very large courses.

Rooms for video and web conferences
In the multipurpose building, the HRZ provides video conferencing equipment in one seminar room (up to 20 people) and one smaller meeting room (up to 6 people).

    About video and web conferencing
A web or video conference enables voice and image communication with one or more participants via the Internet. Similar to IP telephony, voice transmission is in good quality and almost without delay. With the video image, gestures and facial expressions of the participants can be used for communication. Compared to a telephone conversation, web or video conferencing therefore enables more direct contact with the other participants. Particularly when there are several participants, this makes it easier to conduct the conversation. In addition, a screen can be presented by one participant in a web or video conference.

    Quality and bandwidth
Web and video conferences are designed for good and latency-free audio and image quality and therefore require an appropriate bandwidth (performance of the internet connection) to maintain stable connections. At workstations within universities, this is not a problem. If participants are only poorly connected (e.g., from a private Internet access), a test run should be carried out. Audio quality is particularly important for successful communication. Feedback and noise should be minimized. For this purpose, either good headsets or, for a group, a conference microphone with integrated loudspeaker and echo cancellation should be used.
