North American Studies (Master of Arts)

The English-language North American Studies master's program deals with the complex literature and cultures of North America, particularly the USA and Canada, but also the Caribbean and Latin America, and performs interdisciplinary teaching and research work.

Central investigative aspects are the multifaceted interculturalism of the respective countries, which are analyzed using newly developed, transnational and cross-border methods and disciplines, among others.

Focus

Students can specialize in Gender Studies or Media Studies.

Objectives

The program qualifies you for working in research and teaching in the field of North American literature and cultural studies, in editorial professions (journalism, publishing), mediation roles in the intercultural field (language, cultural mediation), professions in administrative services, work in foreign service (EU, UN, embassies) and in international corporations (public relations, management).

  • Admission requirements

    Required university degree

    A qualifying university degree in the fiedls of American Studies, Brith Studies or Anglophone Studies or a university degreein a literary and culturally oriented study program, acquired at a German university, or an equivalent university degree acquired abroad, in which at least 30 credit points (or equivalent achievements in a non-modularized study program) were gained in the field of literary or culturally oriented studies. At least 15 credit points out of these 30 credit points must be gained in connetion with North American issues. In case these North American issues are not listed explicitly in the certificate or the transcipt of records, the applicant is required to hand in other appropriate documents to prove them.

    If the requirements stated above are not met, the examination board will decide on a case-by-case basis. The examination board can require the subsequent completion of additional subject-specific modules of up to 12 credit points. In this case the course of studies may need more time.

    Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission English skills:
    Certification of English language skills at Level C1 of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages."
    Admission Mode Direct admission is granted with complete fulfillment of the admission requirements
