Eligibility assessment process
- International Political Economy (M.Sc., Double Degree)
1. Documents to be submitted
The following documents and certifications are required for participation in the eligibility assessment process:
a) Application for admission (online application via the application portal).
b) Certification of a degree from a subject-relevant bachelor's program in the field of Economics or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university degree.
c) Certification of fundamental economic knowledge in the economic major topic (e.g. Transcript of Records)
d) Certificate of English skills at a C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by the Council of Europe.
e) Tabular resume / CV in English, approx. 1 DIN-A4 page.
f) A letter in English, approx. 2 DIN-A4 pages, in which the applicant presents their subject-related and personal suitability and substantiates their interest in beginning a course of study in the double degree MS of International Political Economy.
g) Additional certifications of personal disciplinary suitability, based on the letter of interest, and regarding relevant employment and practical experience, as applicable.
2. Criteria for personal disciplinary suitability
Personal disciplinary suitability is evaluated based on the submitted documents, according to the following criteria.
- For the final grade points are awarded in the following way:
- Numerical grade 13.0 to 15.0 (decimal grade from 1.3 to 0.7) = 3 points
- Numerical grade 12.2 to 12.9 (decimal grade from 1.6 to 1.4) = 2 points
- Numerical grade 10.0 to 12.1 (decimal grade from 2.3 to 1.7) = 1 point
- Numerical grade 5.0 to below 9.9 (decimal grade from 4.0 to 2.4) = 0 points
(grade scale according to §28 of the General Terms of the Philipps University of Marburg)
- Additional subject-related qualifications from the first qualifying degree which go beyond the minimum requirements (at least 72 credit points (ECTS) in Economics subjects and the associated ancillary sciences, e.g. Mathematics for Economists, Statistics. At least 54 credit points must have been earned in Economics subjects): supplementary and/or advanced knowledge in economics or political science through successful completion of relevant modules or international experience (maximum of 3 points).
- Letter of motivation and additional criteria (maximum of 1 point).
- The admissions suitability commission invites all candidates who have achieved at least 5 points in the above criteria to an interview (15-30 minutes), either in person or by videoconference. The interview will focus on questions about the applicant's knowledge of economics. It also serves as a way to find out more about the applicant's motivation and his or her general ability to successfully complete an academically-oriented master’s program taught in English. One suitability point each is granted for economic knowledge and motivation, including the reviewer's assessment of the student’s ability to successfully complete the degree program (maximum of 2 points).
There is a maximum of 9 suitability points. Applicants who have earned at least 7 suitability points in the eligibility assessment procedure are considered suitable.
