Palma is the capital of Mallorca, with the autonomous government, and it also has the largest port and the largest airport of the Balearic Islands. Palma has around 402,000 inhabitants and is the largest municipality in Mallorca.

The Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) was founded in 1978 and is divided into 10 faculties. In addition to the main campus of the university in Palma, there are other locations in Menorca and Ibiza.
