15.05.2025 Guest Lecture – May 27th : Writing and the Book among the Guaraní in Colonial Spanish America

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Fabián R. Vega, a visiting scholar from the Escuela Interdisciplinaria de Altos Estudios Sociales at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Argentina), will be giving a talk at our institute.

In his presentation, titled “Writing and the Book among the Guaraní: A Lettered Experience in Colonial Spanish America”, Dr. Vega will explore the role of writing and book culture in the Jesuit missions established among the Guaraní during the 17th and 18th centuries. These missions, located in the area now known as the border region of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, served as complex sites of cultural exchange and religious transformation.

The talk focuses on how Guaraní communities engaged with writing—not just as an imposed practice, but as a meaningful appropriation that served their own purposes and left lasting traces beyond the colonial period.

The lecture will take place on Monday, May 27th at 16:00 in Auditorium 109, located at Deutschhausstraße 3, Institutsgebäude (F | 04).

All students, faculty, and members of the public are warmly invited to attend!
