18.05.2026 “Lecture in Spanish: La muerte en el altiplano centro-sur andino durante el período post Tiwanaku” – EDGES Lecture on 20 May 2026

As part of the EDGES Lecture Series, we are pleased to welcome Jédu Sagárnaga (Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, Bolivia) to Philipps-Universität Marburg.

In his lecture “La muerte en el altiplano centro-sur andino durante el período post Tiwanaku”, he explores funerary constructions associated with Aymara societies and the later Inka occupation in the so-called “South-Central Andean Area”.

Traditionally interpreted as funerary structures, these stone, adobe, and mixed constructions are approached as material expressions of the relationships between space, memory, and ancestry in the prehispanic Andes.

Drawing on ritual practices and relational ontologies of the Andean world, the lecture proposes understanding these monuments not only as elements that organized the landscape, but also as forms of mediation between the living and the dead.
