11.05.2026 "Medical Pluralism in Peru: Past and Present" – EDGES Lecture on 19 May 2026

As part of the EDGES Lecture Series, we are pleased to welcome Jorge Lossio Chávez (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) to Philipps-Universität Marburg.

In his lecture “Medical Pluralism in Peru: Past and Present”, he explores the history of health in Peru beyond the idea of a linear transition from “traditional” to “modern” medicine.

Focusing on the coexistence and interaction of diverse therapeutic worlds, including Andean and Amazonian medicine, Western biomedicine, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, religious healing practices, and domestic remedies, the lecture invites us to rethink how medical history itself can be understood and written.

Rather than existing in separate spheres, these medical systems overlap, interact, and are navigated pragmatically by ordinary people in their everyday search for health.
