Transformation of Democracy & the Far Right

What drives far-right support, and when do citizens fail to punish democratic norm violations? I study how latent nativist orientations and political disaffection translate into radical-right votes under structural and political conditions that create opportunity — and the conditions under which citizens’ commitment to democratic norms gives way to partisan calculation.

Democracy, Digital Dynamics & AI

Digital platforms and AI systems are transforming the conditions for democratic engagement. I study how chatbot interactions shape political socialisation, how AI-mediated citizen-representative communication alters political efficacy, how AI-based interventions can strengthen citizens’ democratic resilience, and how platform affordances structure partisan exchange, the spread of misinformation, and collective democratic action in digital spaces.

Identity, Cleavages & Representation

How do place, education, and gender structure political conflict, democratic inclusion, and representation — and what determines citizens’ openness to cultural diversity? I study place-based identity as a cross-cutting voting heuristic rooted in community attachment, how field of education shapes political attitudes, when exposure to female authority reduces far-right susceptibility, and the social and institutional conditions that generate or undermine openness toward cultural diversity.

Computational Social Science & Open Science

I combine experimental and computational methods to study democratic politics: platform simulations that embed participants in realistic social media and participatory settings, large-scale survey experiments, digital trace data, and AI-based text classification. As Editor of Open Science at the European Journal of Political Research, I work to embed transparency and reproducibility as standards across the discipline.
