Markus Denkler: Sprachspott in der Perzeptionsdialektologie: Heinrich Bülds volkslinguistischer Ansatz
Heinrich Büld can be regarded as a pioneer in the field of perceptual dialectology: In “Volk und Sprache im nördlichen Westfalen: Westfälische Ortschaften im Spiegel ihrer Sprache”, written in 1939, he first investigated the question of how dialect speakers perceive their geographically immediate linguistic environment. To this end, Büld assembled an extensive corpus of folkloric language mockery from the Münsterland which he used for a cartographic depiction of the subjective dialect boundaries. This article critically examines Büld’s findings and methods. In addition, a fresh mapping and evaluation based on Büld’s data is undertaken. The spatial structural concepts underlying the intervillage taunts of the Münsterland dialect speakers are investigated. What roles are played by space, by boundaries, and by the localities? Finally, the significance of linguistic taunts for the salience of linguistic features and how such taunts were used in the context of a joking relationship are discussed.
