Information for prospective students

The M.Sc. in Economics and Institutions is an international two-year Master’s programme designed to teach students the knowledge and skills expected of a professional economist. The programme provides rigorous training in all major fields of economics, with a special emphasis on institutional economics.

Targeted group

The M.Sc. in Economics and Institutions targets students who have already earned a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in economics, business administration, or social sciences with at least 90 ECTS credits in economics or relevant methods (e.g., mathematics, statistics). As the Master’s programme is taught in English, fluency in English is required. Prospective students should be interested in learning research methods and applying them to real-world problems. Moreover, they should be open to new perspectives and willing to engage in critical discussion.

Fees

There are no tuition fees at the University of Marburg. There is, however, an administration fee, the so called Semesterbeitrag, which pays for internet access at the university, subsidised meals at the university refectory, and public transportation (Semesterticket) in the state of Hesse and some neighbouring counties, meaning that you can travel for free on (most) trains between Marburg and Frankfurt and even as far as Heidelberg.

Application to the programme

Information about the application process can be found under the heading “Application”. All applications must be submitted via ‘uni-assist’, an online university application service for international students. Submitting your application material as early as possible is recommended for international students who require a visa for Germany. Please note that the university does not accept direct applications!

Scholarships

There are no special scholarships available for the M.Sc. Economics and Institutions programme. However, it may be worthwhile to check into the extensive scholarship opportunities provided by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD.

After finishing your M.Sc. in Marburg

You can apply to a wide variety of national and international organisations or corporations for a career in economic analysis or business. Or you could start pursuing an academic career by studying towards a PhD. Every year, an informative meeting on how to proceed towards a PhD is offered. Please contact Prof. Dr. Bernd Hayo for information.
