Democracy Research

with a focus on the EU, political systems in European comparison and the Federal Republic of Germany

In the Department of Democracy Research at the Institute of Political Science, we deal with the theory of democracy, the history of ideas and empirically with the idea and development of democracy and its counter-movements in Germany and in international comparison. Our topics are the radical and extreme right, global history and politics of the past, democracy in the migration society, democratization of democracy and comparative research on rule. In comparative governance research, we ask whether developed democracies and autocracies not only show differences, but also structural similarities. We understand power and domination relations as social and gender (inequality) relations. We are therefore politico-sociologically oriented. We also represent our research focus in our teaching and involve students in our research questions - both in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.
