"Tradition – Trust - Future"
From 2013 until the end of 2018, the DAAD program "Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks” supports Philipps-Universität’s project “Tradition – Trust – Future”. The project aims to strengthen and to expand the already established strategic relationships with China, a key natiopn in the international scientific community, and entails not only research cooperations but also the explicit recruitment of highly qualified students and junior scientists for joint projects.
Zhejiang Daxue in Hangzhou and Tongji Daxue in Shanghai, both among the elite universities in China, were selected as partners, based on their scientific focus and the possibility of an innovative and trend-setting expansion of all partners' teaching- and research areas.
The partnerships expand already established cooperations in the natural sciences and medicine as well as German as a Foreign Language (DaF). In Fall 2013, the strategic cooperation was officially initiated with a Materials Science Symposium in Hangzhou and a Workshop in shanghai. Joint research projects and networks, summer schools, bi-national doctoral programs and life-long-learning programs for administrative staff are among the measures of the program. The joint activities were continued 2014 with a joint workshop "Functional (Nano) Biomaterials" (Zhejiang Daxue and Philipps-Universität) in Marburg and a joint Fall School "Tumor Biology" (Tongji Daxue and Philipps-Universität). In Summer 2015 a joint Tongji-Philipps-Universität Summer School in Life Sciences/Medicine as well as a Chemistry Summer School were held in Marburg. Annual Summer Schools are held, alternating venues between Shanghai and Marburg. In addition to the contract of the Strategic Partnership, the execution of individual departmental contracts is encouraged. For example, Philipps-Universität's Law School executed departmental contracts with Zhejiang's Guanghaw Law School and Tongji's Law School.
In addition to the listed structured measures, mobility is one of the main fields supported by the Strategic Partnerships. Mobility between the three partners is supported for doctoral students, master students and professors. Furthermore, bachelor students with excellent academic record can apply for stays at the partner institutions and reciprocal clinical rotations at Tongji Medical School/Philipps-Universität's Faculty of Medicine are supported by the program. Qualified students of all levels are encouraged to apply for an exchange in the frame of the Strategic Partnership and doctoral students of all fields can apply for a research stay at the partner institutions.
Students of Philipps-Universität can apply online for a study or research stay at Tongji Daxue and Zhejiang Daxue. Students of Tongji Daxue and Zhejiang Daxue can apply online for a stay at Philipps-Universität.
About the DAAD-Program "Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks“
The DAAD-Program "Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks” serves the creation and expansion of strategic partnerships of German universities with worldwide partners. 117 German higher education institutions applied for the DAAD funding of up to 250.000 Euro a year. 21 projects, with 29 involved countries, were selected for funding (18% of all applicants), for a maximum of four years. November 2015 the funded projects had the opportunity to apply for two additional years of funding of up to 125.000 Euro a year. 50% of the originally funded projects were approved for subsequent funding until the end of 2018. One of the successful applicants was Philipps-Universität Marburg together with its Strategic Partners Tongji University and Zhejiang University.
The program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
