Eligibility assessment process - History (M.A.)
1. Documents to be submitted
The following documents and certifications are required for participation in the eligibility assessment process:
a) Application for admission (online application of the online application portal)
b) The first, fundamental university degree with final grade.
c) Certification of historical knowledge amounting to at least 24 CP.
d) Certification of skills in English at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe
e) Certification of skills in French, Italian, and Spanish at Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or a functional lay knowledge or Latin skills within the scope of the Latinum.
f) Letter not more than DIN A4 pages in which the applicant illustrates his/her
• expectations for the Master’s program in History at the Philipps University of Marburg and
• disciplinary suitability based on personal commitment, social competence and ability to work on a time (primarily group work in courses), work involving self-reflection, practical experience in professional fields relevant to graduates in History, foreign language skills and subject-related international experiences or academic interaction with history-related topics (such as in a Bachelor’s thesis).
g) Curriculum vitae in tabular form (one DIN A4 page).
h) If applicable, proof of the reasons for suitability listed under f) and g), such as practical experience, stays abroad, further foreign language skills.
2. Selection process
Personal disciplinary suitability is evaluated based on the submitted documents, according to the following criteria. A total of up to 100 suitability points can be achieved.
2.1 Points are assigned in the following manner for the overall grade for the first degree:
Grade points 13.9 to 15.0 (= decimal grade 1.0 to 0.7) = 60 points
Grade points 12.7 to 13.8 (= decimal grade 1.4 to 1.1) = 58 points
Grade points 11.9 to 12.6 (= decimal grade 1.7 to 1.5) = 56 points
Grade points 10.9 to 11.8 (= decimal grade 2.0 to 1.8) = 54 points
Grade points 10.0 to 10.8 (= decimal grade 2.3 to 2.1) = 52 points
Grade points 8.9 to 9.9 (= decimal grade 2.7 to 2.4) = 46 points
Grade points 7.9 to 8.8 (= decimal grade 3.0 to 2.8) = 40 points
Grade points 7.0 to 7.8 (= decimal grade 3.1 to 3.3) = 34 points
The specifications are based on the grade scale according to § 28 of the General Terms of the Philipps University Marburg.
2.2 Certified practical experience (of at least one month in each case) at state and private institutions in academic or adjacent areas (such as museums, archives, foundations, presses, publishing companies, educational institutions, etc.) The work performed there must be related to historical studies (= per work experience between one month and five months duration 5 points; per internship from at least 6 months duration 10 points; max. 10 points).
2.3. Certified subject-related international experience (of at least two months in each case; per country and stay of two to five months 5 points, for a stay of at least 6 months in a country 10 points; max. 10 points).
2.4. Certified knowledge of other modern foreign languages not listed under pint 1 d) and e) or knowledge of ancient languages on at least the B1 level of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (5 points per language; max. 10 points).
2.5. Evaluation of the letter of interest and resume in addition to associated certifications for subject-related and personal suitability (max. 10 points).
An evaluation with a total of at least 52 suitability points is prerequisite for admission to the program.
A brief protocol must be prepared of the significant criteria that resulted in the eligibility assessment process.
