Eligibility assessment process - Molecular Biotechnology (M.Sc.)

1. Documents to be submitted

a) Application for admission (online application submitted via the online admission portal)

b) The first, undergraduate higher education degree with final grade, if already available.

c) The Transcript of Records to establish the content of your studies to date together with your basic knowledge of biology and the associated supporting sciences of mathematics and physics.

d) Evidence of English proficiency at Level C1 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

e) Tabular CV (1 DIN A4 page) in English.

f) A letter in English of approx. two A4 pages in which the applicant outlines their suitability for the subject and explains in particular why they have chosen to study for a Master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology in Marburg.

g) If applicable, further evidence of personal subject-related suitability that relates to the above-mentioned criteria

 

2. Procedure based on the documents submitted

A total of up to 8 suitability points can be achieved in the first part of the eligibility assessment procedure. Suitability is initially based on the following criteria:

a) Points are awarded for the overall grade as follows:

  • Grade points 15.0 to 13.0 (decimal mark 0.7 to 1.3) = 4 points
  • Grade points 12.9 to 10.9 (decimal mark 1.4 to 2.0) = 3 points
  • Grade points 10.8 to 8.6 (decimal mark 2.1 to 2.8) = 2 points
  • Grade points 8.5 to 7.0 (decimal mark 2.9 to 3.3) = 1 point
  • Grade points 6.9 to 5.0 (decimal mark 3.4 to 4.0) = 0 points

The information is based on the grading scale according to § 28 General Regulations of the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

b) Supplementary subject-related qualifications from the first degree qualifying for a profession (maximum 3 points).

Proof of bioscientific and biotechnological knowledge acquired through successfully completed relevant specialisation and/or degree courses). The points are awarded as follows:

  • 30 or more credit points = 3 points
  • 24 to 29 credit points = 2 points
  • 18 to 23 credit points = 1 point

c) Suitability statement (maximum 1 point).

In the letter and accompanying curriculum vitae, the applicant should present their subject-related and personal suitability and set out their expectations for taking up a Master of Science in Molecular Biotechnology at the Department of Biology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

 

3. Interview

The eligibility assessment committee invites all applicants who have achieved at least 6 points in the written eligibility assessment procedure according to point 2 to a telephone or in-person interview lasting 15 to 30 minutes.

The interview will focus on subject-related questions. The aim is also to find out whether the applicant can successfully complete this Master's programme. Up to 15 points can be awarded for this. Candidates are considered suitable if they score at least 12 points out of 15 in the eligibility assessment interview.
