Trade, Distribution, Publishing, Mediation, Consulting
This area encompasses all activities related to “customers” or “clients.” Those with a background in history are trusted to respond to customers in a calm, composed, and attentive manner and then to handle the matter at hand with the systematic and meticulous approach typical of their field. Knowledge-based media, far beyond only books, are considered the domain of the humanities. With a bachelor’s degree, it makes sense to acquire the additional appropriate professional training (“self-designed dual study program”). Trainee programs and further training will also lead to the desired goal. Proving your service and customer-orientated skills via a job in retail or gastronomy can be helpful.
Consulting is also a service that involves customer relations. People with a background in history have quite good prospects in the fields of educational, career, and academic counseling. Since decision-makers of all kinds are constantly preoccupied with the prospect of continuity and change, there are also opportunities for entry into the field of political and business consulting.
Possible Tasks
- In the field of publishing, you read, edit, and proofread manuscripts and support authors. In sales, your main tasks include supporting bookstores and retailers, as well as maintaining contact with companies and public institutions.
- In book retail, you advise your customers, maintain and expand the product range, and ship orders. You organize readings and (promotional) events, create flyers and newsletters, and take on or delegate accounting tasks. Depending on your interests and areas of expertise, you may have the opportunity to work for specialized booksellers, such as antique bookstores, publishing houses, or music stores.
- In the field of expert auditing and appraisal, you conduct on-site visits as necessary, collect and analyze all relevant information, and present the results to your clients.
- In the tourism sector, you design and conduct target group-oriented and theme-specific city tours for city marketing organizations, tourism offices, or tourist information centers.
- As a tour guide, you care for customers, mediate between them and hotel management, and manage leisure activities and events. Other areas of employment include travel agencies; event agencies; leisure and adventure facilities; and trade fair, congress, and exhibition companies. The main tasks here are on-site representation and the expansion of the range of services on offer, with a focus on a specific region, the historical and cultural features of the region, and local events and services.Industries and Occupations
