Description

The Master’s degree course entitled “Literature Communication in the Media” trains experts in contemporary literature and its communication in the cultural sector. The degree course is based on four pillars:

• By way of research-oriented teaching in literature and media studies, it enables students to observe the constantly changing cultural field, recognise new developments, identify them and evaluate them. Individual and group mentoring ensures close academic supervision and early networking within and outside the university.
• In our own editorial office, in practical training courses and in joint research projects with established partners from renowned cultural institutions, students acquire career-relevant skills that enable them to navigate a rapidly changing economic and media environment and productively relate theory and practice to each other, including in tandem courses.
• Knowledge of literary history is imparted as the present can only be understood by those who know its prehistory and have comparative material from other eras and contexts at their disposal: these are jointly prepared in innovative digital formats in collaboration with the Marburg Media Centre based on audiovisual materials from publishers, radio, film and television.
• Activities focus on German-language literature from the Middle Ages to the present day, but the comparative perspective is not neglected. In transatlantic teaching and research projects, international cooperation, which is indispensable in the literary world, is also practised and experienced by way of (digital) exchanges.

Major topics

The Master’s degree course consists of the study areas “Literary Life and Media History,” “Literature, Culture and Media Theory,” “Cultural Practice” and the “Final Modules.” Particular emphasis is placed on a teaching unit developed specifically for this programme, “Teaching Editing” and an academic module that is geared towards methodology and dedicated to the question of how current trends in the contemporary literary field can be captured (and utilised). In the practical module, students can choose between a traditional practical training course and a self-determined project.
