Language Courses

The Language Center of the Philipps-Universität offers you a wide range of courses: its curriculum comprises nine languages! You may attend courses to learn Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish or Swedish. The courses, organized according to the levels of the European Framework of Reference (A1 to C1), are normally held during the lecture period and take place once or twice a week (between 2 and 4 lessons per week; 1 lesson = 45 minutes). For each successfully completed course, you will receive ECTS credits and a certificate.

In order to ensure that every student finds the proper course level, placement tests are held for every language at the beginning of each semester. You can find the relevant test dates as well as information on how to register for a course on the Language Center’s website (see below).

You do not have time to attend a course? In this case, you can improve your language skills on your own by attending the so-called Selbstlernzentrum (self-learning center), which keeps multi-media learning software at hand for you. Here you can train your grammar, vocabulary, listening or reading skills. And for those who prefer classic techniques, the Selbstlernzentrum offers magazines, textbooks, audio CDs and films. In case you have questions or encounter technical problems, there is always someone there to help you out.

Furthermore, the Language Center offers the special service of language learning in tandems. Such learning takes place when native speakers of two different languages join one another and work together in order to learn each other’s language and develop some knowledge of the culture and community of the respective partner.
