The interdisciplinary Politik und Wirtschaft des Nahen und Mittleren Ostens / Middle Eastern Politics and Economics master's program represents a conjunction of political and economic sciences for the Near and Middle East regions that is unique in Germany. Following a subject-relevant bachelor's program, the master's program expands regional and linguistic knowledge (Arabic and Persian) and develops and discusses topics at the interfaces of politics and economics in a research-oriented manner. Students should have interest in analyzing socio-political conflicts in the Near and Middle East from interdisciplinary perspectives and in pursuing independent political-economic questions. Students who already exhibit economic knowledge will initially attend political science modules and vice versa.

Major topics

The master's program focuses on content that is interwoven into economics and politics. For example: resource conflicts, the distribution of oil revenues, correlations of prosperity and development, political effects of investment, Islamic economic policy, clientelism, etc.

Objectives

The master's degree qualifies you for a wide variety of professional work in the political-economic field of the Near and Middle East, and for a doctorate program. During the program, you will acquire the skills to analyze political-economic contexts and to develop solution strategies. The program does not lead to any standardized occupational profile; instead, the program qualifies you for a variety of professional fields, including:

  • International commercial enterprises (industry, trade, banks, financial services) 
  • Science (universities, research institutions)
  • Political consulting (public administration, associations, institutions and organizations)
  • Media, publishing and public relations work
