This workshop addresses the basic rules and values of conducting responsible research and how to distinguish between good practice, questionable scientific practice, and misconduct. You will develop solutions for difficult situations in science. You will be encouraged to speak about mistakes and problems.
The following aspects will be discussed:

  • Principles, norms and values of responsible conduct of research.
  • Forms and degrees of scientific misconduct and questionable research practices.
  • Dealing with and managing data, sources, and ideas.
  • Authorship and the process of publishing.
  • Conflict management: how to deal with scientific misconduct.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After the workshop, you will be

  • able to name important principles of good scientific practice and demonstrate their importance in conducting science, as well as for protecting your work (small-group exercises),
  • able to discuss important aspects of and problems with authorship, publication culture, and data management with colleagues and apply the examples to your own situation (case discussions, homework),
  • able to identify various forms of scientific misconduct of different magnitudes and explain why they hinder or corrupt the process of science (case discussions and small-group exercises),
  • aware of the appropriate procedures of counseling and support in the event of conflicts (information),
  • motivated to maintain your own scientific integrity by discussing specific and structural shortcomings with your coworkers (case discussions, homework).

Requirements 

To participate in the online course, you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and a microphone), possibly a webcam, and a stable Internet connection.

Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.
